As the scene gets increasingly more erratic, it's revealed that the "Colonel" is actually an artificial intelligence under the control of the Patriots, the shadow organization that rules the world via information control. Afterward, gamers are shocked to discover that the true protagonist is Raiden, a rookie operative who's on the hunt for the Sons of the Patriots and the terrorist organization Dead Cell. On a mission to do reconnaissance of a new Metal Gear, Snake arrives just in time to see his old foe Revolver Ocelot stealing the new Metal Gear and revealing he's being possessed by Snake's brother, Liquid Snake. Basically you could never pay to get a better edge than somebody else competitively but you could pay to have more options to optimize.After the heady success of MGS, gamers were eager for more Solid Snake. You could pay IP or RP to get more champs, to speed up your profile level to get max pregame buffs.
Everyone had pretty much the same list of buffs so competitively it became a game of optimizations and selecting the best champs. However there is a cap to the buffs one could give.
As your level progressed you could give your champions more buffs at the start of the game. There was also a profile level system from 1-30. More IP could be earned by playing and more per play by paying RP. IP was earned by playing and RP by paying. They had IP and RP kind of like BP and SV. Its changed but I have heard no complaints about it so I assume the guiding principles are the same. That's why I usually make the comparison to LOL in how it stays competitive and fun to play for free, but also encourages spending for fun and for certain advantages that help make the overall experience of the game better for an individual who plays while keeping the competitive ground even in individual games. I understand the aprehension around that.
